The Calliope and Preeminent Awards Gala and Showcase is an annual industry event produced and directed by Calliope CEO Kristy Martin. Every year, this ambitious production is held at a venue that showcases San Antonio's rich history and heritage. Industry professionals, special guests, and VIP's from coast to coast attend this prominent fête. Previous luminaries and dignitaries include producers, directors, talent agents, modeling agents, advertisers, casting directors, photographers, and fashion designers from San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago.
"The Callies" serves as a wonderful opportunity for many talented individuals to synergize their skills and gifts through the creation of an elaborate and high-tech stage production and variety show. This six week workshop experience allows participants to develop new skills, hone their crafts, showcase rehearsed performances, and network with high profile entertainment executives. Preparation for the Callie Awards involves the creative collaboration and expertise of many talented professionals, including actors, models, singers, dancers, choreographers, stage technicians, set designers, lighting engineers, costumers, videographers, and production assistants. Talent participate in themed production numbers and individual performances, and serve as presenters and award handlers.
There are two award categories, the Callie Awards and the Preeminent Awards. The winners of Callie Awards are determined by peer voting. An independent accountant tallies the ballots and determines five nominees in each category. This is the only person who knows the Callie winners before they are announced during the show. The Preeminent Awards are chosen by Kristy Martin after careful consideration. The Preeminents are designed to honor talent who reflect the utmost professionalism, skill, enthusiasm, work ethic, determination, integrity, attitude, and - lest we forget - the ability to entertain us! Over twenty five Callie and Preeminent Awards are presented over the course of the evening.
A select number of talent are chosen to participate each year. Ambition, commitment, drive, and the desire to take one's career to the next level are prerequisites for participation. Talent explore and facilitate their passions, internal strengths, confidence level, and future opportunities. They gain an understanding of the realities of show business - the long hours, hard work, conflict resolution, the need for stamina, and "the hurry up and wait" philosophy.
Talent receive intensive, hands-on training via the rehearsal process. Every participant acts, sings, and dances in the production. Special skills are prominently featured. Actors hone existing skills, develop new ones, learn the biz, and workshop a major theatrical production. Participants work with a producer, director, casting director, choreographer, costumer, and other on set professionals. They increase their knowledge of - and experience with - the dynamics of technical theatre, such as sound and lighting effects, microphones, and stage boundaries. Actors learn ensemble acting through a nurturing family environment and support system.
Actors perform onstage in front of a live audience, but learn to "bring it down" to impress clients who work in the film and television mediums. Talent also receive intensive feedback from producers, casters, and agents. They learn how to strategize so they can eventually expand into larger markets across Texas and nationwide.
